Abstract

Purpose

The use of information and communication technologies has become essential in organizations, as it is considered a key factor for modernization; however, many public or private institutions do not start with the process of digitizing their services. The purpose of this paper is to seek to manage the digital identity through a mobile application on Android that is intuitive and simple to access information in a public entity in the Province of Cañete.

Design/methodology/approach

In this regard, for the development of the mobile application, it was divided into three phases: analysis and design, where the functional and nonfunctional requirements are collected, the interface and the client–server architecture are designed; development, where the predesigned interfaces are encoded with their respective documentation; finally, software testing, to detect possible errors, unexpected crushes and behavior of the functionalities at user level.

Findings

Thus, it was possible to implement a directory of mobile services for citizens to facilitate access to data, content and public information such as files and location of municipal premises.

Originality/value

The application provides a new means of digital communication to provide access to institutional information and monitoring of procedures as digital banking, education and medicine.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present the novel stacked machine learning approach (SMLA) to estimate low-cycle fatigue (LCF) life of SAC305 solder across structural parts. Using the finite element simulation (FEM) and continuous damage mechanics (CDM) model, a fatigue life database is built. The stacked machine learning (ML) model's iterative optimization during training enables precise fatigue predictions (2.41% root mean square error [RMSE], R2 = 0.975) for diverse structural components. Outliers are found in regression analysis, indicating potential overestimation for thickness transition specimens with extended lifetimes and underestimation for open-hole specimens. Correlations between fatigue life, stress factors, nominal stress and temperature are unveiled, enriching comprehension of LCF, thus enhancing solder behavior predictions.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces stacked ML as a novel approach for estimating LCF life of SAC305 solder in various structural parts. It builds a fatigue life database using FEM and CDM model. The stacked ML model iteratively optimizes its structure, yielding accurate fatigue predictions (2.41% RMSE, R2 = 0.975). Outliers are observed: overestimation for thickness transition specimens and underestimation for open-hole ones. Correlations between fatigue life, stress factors, nominal stress and temperature enhance predictions, deepening understanding of solder behavior.

Findings

The findings of this paper highlight the successful application of the SMLA in accurately estimating the LCF life of SAC305 solder across diverse structural components. The stacked ML model, trained iteratively, demonstrates its effectiveness by producing precise fatigue lifetime predictions with a RMSE of 2.41% and an “R2” value of 0.975. The study also identifies distinct outlier behaviors associated with different structural parts: overestimations for thickness transition specimens with extended fatigue lifetimes and underestimations for open-hole specimens. The research further establishes correlations between fatigue life, stress concentration factors, nominal stress and temperature, enriching the understanding of solder behavior prediction.

Abstract

Purpose

People who suffer from phobias try to avoid a specific object or feared situation by creating a great obstacle that causes serious consequences in their daily life; the most effective way to deal with a phobia is through exposure therapy, which according to one of the most important principles of psychology states that to overcome a fear you have to face it. The purpose of this paper is to develop a mobile application based on augmented reality (AR) for the treatment of spider phobia (Araneae).

Design/methodology/approach

The application development methodology was divided into two phases: design where sketches were made according to functional requirements, and the client server model was used for user queries and the development phase where the modules for the information of the phobia; and visualization of the arachnid in different morphological forms was implemented through the development tools.

Findings

The findings of this study, in this sense, state that it was possible to overcome the phobia in an essential way by ceasing to perceive harmless things as dangerous, helping them to manage stress and keep them under control.

Originality/value

Allowing to face their fears in support of existing therapeutic processes through images with progressively AR, being an innovative and accessible treatment from an economic, technological and professional point of view.

This study aims to evaluate the association between ethnic minority membership and their knowledge about their human health rights in Peru.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the association between ethnic minority membership and their knowledge about their human health rights in Peru.

Design/methodology/approach

A secondary analysis of the National Health User Satisfaction Survey 2015–2016 was conducted using an analytical cross-sectional design. Participants who spoke Quechua, Aymara, Awajun, Bora or a language other than Spanish aged 15 year were considered as a racial minority. The question “Do you know that by law you have health rights?” was applied to incorporate knowledge on health rights. Generalized linear models of the Poisson distribution were used to calculate crude prevalence ratio and adjusted prevalence ratio. A total of 3,721 responses were included in the analysis.

Findings

The average age was 38.3 year, and 26.6% were males. The prevalence of belonging to an ethnic minority was 7.7%, and 27.6% of the participants did not know about their health rights. An association was found in the adjusted regression analysis between belonging to an ethnic minority and a greater probability of not knowing human health rights.

Originality/value

The value of the works lies in one in four participants who did not know he had health rights by law. Belonging to an ethnic minority was associated with not knowing about having human health rights.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to shed some light on the distribution of population, living in disaster risk areas in Brazil, on the intra-urban scale. The following three aspects are evaluated in this paper: the distribution of exposed population according to municipal size classification; the population density in disaster risk areas; and the municipal human development classification for the municipalities with disaster risk areas.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is based on an explorative approach. The main database used is a result of the association of landslide and flood risk areas to demographic census, available for 825 Brazilian municipalities. Additional databases were integrated to characterize disaster risk management and municipal human development.

Findings

The results revealed that the population exposed to disaster areas is concentrated within the capitals and small cities in the country. Moreover, disaster risk areas are densely populated even in small cities, suggesting that it is a reality faced not only by the larger cities. Finally, disaster risk areas exist even inside municipalities with a high level of human development.

Practical implications

These findings could contribute to the understanding of the spatialisation of disaster risk in Brazil, a primordial step for the reduction of human losses.

Originality/value

A novel perspective about the Brazilian population exposed to disaster risk was obtained, revealing a current issue faced by the municipalities independent of the size classification and level of human development.

Abstract

The chapter analyzed the knowledge transfer processes of the Latin American academy to the actors in its environment, and the Science, Technology, and Innovation policy that facilitates or inhibits the processes of generation and use of this university knowledge. The cases of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico were analyzed to understand the practice of the university knowledge transfer model at different levels – strategic, organizational, and operational – and the complexities involved in the process. It was evidenced by the urgent demand for the transformation of the Latin American University through sustainability and digitalization approaches to be a catalyst for development in the region. The chapter closes with a critical analysis of the phenomenon, future lines of research, and implications of the praxis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose the study of the adoption and use of e-banking by adults over the age of 50, from the theoretical framework based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology.

Design/methodology/approach

After proving the validity of the model, the authors analyse the heterogeneity of these persons by using a structural model-based latent class segmentation called partial least squares prediction-oriented segmentation.

Findings

The results enable the identifying of four segments with different behaviours with respect to this electronic service. As implications of the results obtained, it is observed how sociodemographic characteristics do not explain their differences. However, the psychographic as well as the cognitive age, self-confidence and audacity are discriminating and explanatory criteria for the behaviour of the four segments.

Originality/value

From the academic point of view, this paper offers important contributions to the prior literature. First, although there is an extensive literature on the use of internet banking, the authors have nevertheless found a clear lack of research studies related to the specific group of older adults. There are not many works that exclusively deal with the elderly’s acceptation and use of technologies, and even less so in the case of internet banking services. Also, if the elderly are focussed, then it is discovered that there is a socially shared stereotype that sees them as inexpert and cut off from technology. This is, however, an unfair view that conceals a broad diversity of behaviours as has been proved for the different segments found.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to formulate the cost of corruption and undue private benefit.

Design/methodology/approach

The design is based on cost formulas of the corruption already formulated, and the design of these formulas allows the calculation for Argentina in 2021 of the cost of the corruption.

Findings

The corruption cost models for bribes and cost overruns for public works are the theoretical basis for obtaining the undue private benefit. Based on the formulas developed to calculate the costs of corruption for Argentina 2021.

Research limitations/implications

There are no limitations in the model.

Practical implications

In addition to the calculation of the cost of corruption, the formula of private profit undue by corruption is developed.

Social implications

The social implications are certainty about the cost of corruption for Argentina in 2021.

Originality/value

The present work is original and its value is given by the formulation and practical demonstration of the cost of corruption for Argentina in 2021 and the undue private benefit.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways for the formulation of a model for calculating the cost of corruption per country, taking into account the social cost.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology is practical exploration; the model is formulated along with the social cost of specific calculation. Based on two specific acts of corruption, bribery and overpricing of public works, these acts are private and public corruption. From there, the model is formulated along with the social cost of specific calculation, based on two specific acts of corruption, bribery and overpricing of public works.

Findings

This paper concludes that the model is applicable to all the countries of the world, based on their tax structure.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations do not exist in the model; the additional implications are the extension of the model. The model can be used for local governments or countries.

Practical implications

Countries can calculate the theoretical cost of corruption in their local, regional or national economies, based on two specific acts of corruption, in political, private and public corruption; bribery and overpricing of public works.

Social implications

The social implications include knowing the theoretical cost of corruption and their effects.

Originality/value

The model calculates the cost of corruption and its economic and social impact.

Reproductive governances are articulated in this context by ideas and social values regarding family and motherhood, the binomial of infertility-TRA, legislation and norms and health professionals' practices. In addition, it shows how diverse infertile bodies experience (and withstand) these reproductive governances.
